Foxford postman to deliver to refugee camp
A postman based in Foxford whose normal run takes him to the villages of Newtown, Cloghans, and Knockmore will be undertaking a much longer delivery in the near future when he heads to Bulgaria in September this year to deliver aid to a Syrian children’s refugee camp. Brendan Medlar has volunteered to be a driver on the Communications Workers Union convoy to the camp, a 4,000 mile round trip. Mr Medlar who will be driving an An Post truck will meet with the projects partners from Eircom and will travel to the UK, where they will join a further 10 to 12 trucks for the trek across Europe to the camp.
Patty Cross celebrates forty years with P O’Connor and Son
P O’Connor and Son, solicitors in Swinford, are congratulating Patty Cross, their office manager, who is with the legal firm for 40 years this month. Ms Cross, who lives in Foxford, started with the firm as a shorthand typist immediately after finishing secretarial school. The firm has developed throughout her time with it and she has been instrumental in ensuring the quality service, including steering it to achieve the Quality Mark in 1993 through to 1999 and other awards.
Donate a Dress fundraiser this Saturday
A charity fundraiser ‘Donate a Dress’ is due to take place tomorrow November 16 at Breaffy House Hotel. The event is being run to raise much needed funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland branch within the county. It currently runs two separate dementia specific daycare services in Foxford and Castlebar. The centres provide care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia in the towns of Castlebar and Foxford and the surrounding areas, reaching as far out as Killala and Westport. The daycare centres are opened on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (Castlebar) and Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (Foxford) from 10am to 3pm. Both are managed by a trained team made up of a highly qualified nurse and carers.
Official opening of new Knockmore/Foxford boxing gym
The preparations are well underway for the official opening of the new Knockmore/Foxford boxing gym in Foxford which will be held on Friday evening next, August 23 at 7pm. Fr Padraig Costello will celebrate Mass in the gym, first with the official opening being carried out by Minister of State for Sport, Michael Ring afterwards. A great evening’s entertainment has been lined up for all who come along and it’s open to everyone over the age of ten. The club has issued invitations to all the six Mayo girls who recently competed in the European Union Championships and to all boxing clubs in Mayo.

We’re creatures of habit in this country. Not ones for moving away from the norm. This is especially true when it comes to socialising. We go out at the same time to meet the same people, frequent the same establishments and drink the same drinks. During the summer we might throw a concert or two into the mix. But for the most part we don’t exercise our cultural minds.

Hope House golf classic fundraiser
A golf classic in aid of Hope House will take place on Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10 at Strokestown Golf Club, with all proceeds going towards the Foxford-based addiction rehabilitation centre.
Peter Hynes to become new county manager
Current Westport town manager Peter Hynes is to be appointed as the new county manager, replacing Des Mahon who retired from the post at the end of November last year. The Moycullen native, who lives in Foxford, will be put forward for ratification at the May monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. Mr Hynes currently combines the role of Westport town manager along with director of services for the Westport and Belmullet electoral areas and as director of services for the housing section of the council.
