Joint Mayo manager Noel Connelly said last night, (Monday, August 17) that he expects both David Clarke and Tom Cunniffe to be back in full training this weekend as Mayo ramp up their preparations for their All Ireland semi-final against Dublin on August 30. Connelly was speaking on the day that Mayo attacker Micheal Conroy was ruled out for the season after picking up an injury in club action at the weekend.

Taoiseach welcomes landing of fiber optic cable in Killala

The West of Ireland is set to become a key telecommunications and data gateway over the coming months with the construction of a new transatlantic fibre optic cable system which will have the capacity to handle up to one third of the world’s telephone calls.  This follows the installation of the Irish portion of the cable in Killala, on Friday – the first time a cable of this type has been connected to the Western region.

Bohola teacher leading the charge for pancreas surgeon

The lack of a surgeon who is capable of carrying out a pancreas transplant in the State, since the retirement of Dr David Hickey last Christmas, is putting the lives of a large number of people at risk. This week 32-year-old Rachel O'Hora (who needs both a kidney and pancreas transplant) from Bohola outlined the difficulties faced patients like her who are in need of a pancreas transplant. Ms O'Hora, who is a teacher based in Dublin, was speaking at an information event in Kiltimagh which called on people to get involved and sign a petition and show their support for the immediate hiring of a pancreas surgeon.
