Fear of physical or verbal abuse and for their own safety were among the top reasons for not approaching somebody parked illegally in accessible parking spots, according to a survey of over 2,300 people carried out by the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland (DDAI) this month.

At present, Gardai and Traffic Wardens do not have the power to issue fines to drivers who illegally park in accessible parking bays in private carparks like shopping centres, educational institutions, hospitals and other spaces.
