GP’s vascular surgical device wins Clinical Innovation Award

A vascular surgical device developed by a local GP (and participant in NUI Galway’s BioInnovate programme) that makes it easier for doctors to access the body during vascular surgery has won the Clinical Innovation Award 2014. As a result, Dr Cliona Murphy will work with Cleveland Clinic to develop improved outcomes from vascular surgery. Dr Murphy, a General Practitioner and current participant in the BioInnovate programme in National University of Ireland Galway, collaborated with colleagues to identify a technology that will make it easier for doctors to access the body during vascular surgery, and potentially improve outcomes for patients as a result.

University to play a key role in three of five new research centres announced this week

A new world-class medical device research centre is to be established at NUI Galway as part of a €245 million national investment in science and technology announced this week. The funding will see five new Science Foundation Ireland research centres established around the country, with NUI Galway playing a key role in three of these.

Problems facing retail sector to be discussed at Castlebar meeting

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will be in Mayo County Council Offices in Castlebar next Monday, April 22, from 9.30am to 11.30am as it resumes its series of regional meetings on key issues facing the retail industry, particularly the impact of the black market, licensing requirements in the retail sector and future developments in the sector.
