Confusion cleared as business end of championship begins
It certainly has been an action-packed if somewhat confusing week on the football front in Westmeath. In a typical case of Murphy’s law a bizarre set of results left three teams: Garrycastle, Tyrrellspass, and Castledaly, all on six points fighting for two knockout places in section B.
Marathon and triathlon to cause traffic disruption for Mayo fans
Supporters making their way to Croke Park for Sunday’s big games may want to leave some extra time for their journey or choose an alternative route, with two major athletics events taking place between Mayo and Croke Park. The annual Longford Marathon is scheduled to start on Sunday morning, with a route that will include the Tarmonbarry to Longford road which will be a main artery to Dublin for Mayo supporters. The marathon will see competitors setting off from Longford between 8.30am and 10am, with an expected finishing time of between 1pm and 4pm for all competitors.
Mayo simply bullied Cork into submission
I discovered last Sunday that football does occasionally work to Hollywood endings and rose-red sunsets. Last Sunday’s game was a big occasion for Mayo football. Our reputation as a team of being able to compete with the big boys was under threat. However we should not have worried ourselves as Mayo delivered a fearless determined display which ranks up there with the very best we have witnessed heretofore and in doing so ensured that the integrity of Mayo football is back where it belongs after a disappointing couple of years.
Kilkenny’s 5-in-a-row quest inspires dreams of pop stardom for Kate
As Kilkenny’s hurlers head into their crucial All-Ireland semi-final with Cork this weekend, they may just have found the perfect cheerleader to propel them on their momentous quest.
The crucial match that Loughrea lost
One of the many voices in our kitchen when I was growing up was Michael O’Hehir and the Sunday afternoon game. The GAA (Chumann Lúthchleas Gael) has been blessed with its RTE broadcasters. I don’t think anyone can equal the inimitable Míchéal Ó Muircheartaigh, whose all inclusive broadcasts today are a performance in themselves. I think I am the same as most people to say that I turn down the sound on the TV, and turn up the volume on the radio when Ó Muircheartaigh takes flight.
