Manulla keep things interesting at the top

There was no shortage of action in the Westaro Cup this weekend as the first round of games saw 23 goals hit the back of the net over the five games played. The big game of the weekend saw Castlebar Celtic grab the bragging rights over Westport United with a 4-3 win over their old rivals in Celtic Park. It was a thrilling encounter that saw both sides swap the lead on a few occasions and Westport United finish with ten men.

Mayo sides given testing Connacht Cup tasks

There are eight Mayo sides left in the Connacht Junior Cup after last Sunday’s third round of action. The competition now moves forward to the last 16 with only three games between those remaining and a place in the final. The first of those fourth round games takes place this Sunday when Manulla host St Patrick’s in Carramore at 2pm. The Galway side currently are sitting second bottom of the Western Hygiene Supplies Premier Division with just one win from their 11 games so far this season. Manulla will be hoping they have the quality to breach a defence that has conceded 36 goals in league football already this season.

With four games gone from 14 for six of the eight sides, Ballina Town have found themselves six points clear at the top of the table with four wins from four. Packed neatly behind them on six points are three sides, Ballyheane, Manulla, and Snugboro United, with Castlebar Celtic and Westport United tied together on four points in fifth and sixth places. Claremorris and Iorras Aontaithe make up the bottom two, with Claremorris just one point behind the two flagship names of Mayo soccer, and Iorras Aontaithe who have only played three points have just a point to show for their efforts so far.

Celtic on the chase for cup glory
