Mayo sides given testing Connacht Cup tasks

There are eight Mayo sides left in the Connacht Junior Cup after last Sunday’s third round of action. The competition now moves forward to the last 16 with only three games between those remaining and a place in the final. The first of those fourth round games takes place this Sunday when Manulla host St Patrick’s in Carramore at 2pm. The Galway side currently are sitting second bottom of the Western Hygiene Supplies Premier Division with just one win from their 11 games so far this season. Manulla will be hoping they have the quality to breach a defence that has conceded 36 goals in league football already this season.

The draw for the fourth round of the competition will see Moy Villa have a home tie against Athenry if they can overcome Glenview Stars in their third round tie which was postponed last Sunday.

Westport United, who got a walkover against Straide and Foxford last weekend and have bigger things on their mind this weekend, will take on City United at home at City United from the Sligo-Leitrim District League. The Sligo outfit are currently sitting in fifth place in the Sligo-Leitrim District Super League.

Conn Rangers who had a walkover win over Roscommon and District League side Fohenagh FC in the last round have been pitted in an all Mayo clash against Glenhest Rovers who beat Swagmann Wanderers of the Sligo-Leitrim District League 5-4 on penalties after the game finished 3-3 after extra time on the astro-turf in Milebush Park on Sunday.

Ballyheane will have a home tie against Strand Celtic in the next round. Ballyheane beat Coolaney United 5-2 in the last round of the competition last Sunday. Castlebar Celtic will be on the road to either Galway Hibs or St Bernard’s depending on who wins in their still to be played last 32 game. Celtic had a comfortable 6-0 away to Knocknacarra in the previous round with Barry McLoughlin, Ioseph O’Reilly, Paul Fitzpatrick, Colm Nevin (twice ), and Shaun Gormley all finding the back of the net. Iorras Aontaithe will make the long trip to Drum in Galway to take on Salthill Devon in the next round, Iorras saw off the challenge of Ballyglass 5-3 last Sunday, with the Galway side knocking out Achill Rovers 2-1 on the island to book their spot in the last 32.

In the Connacht Junior Shield the competition has reached the quarter-final stage of the competition and there is only one Mayo side left in the competition, Urlar United. The central Mayo outfit had a 5-1 win over Ballyvary Blue Bombers last Sunday, with Crossmolina, Newport Town, and Manulla B all bowing out of the competition last Sunday.
