Despite advice from the executive of Mayo County Council and a compromise proposal to delay a decision for a month to seek legal advice, the elected members of Mayo County Council this week voted not to extinguish a public right of way at a junction at Carrowbaun, Swinford.

This monthly meeting of Mayo County Council saw the Fine Gael members of the council launch a scathing attack on the recent budget cutbacks. The remarks of the majority side of the house saw a number of Fianna Fáil councillors admit that they themselves were not happy with the budget. Achill-based Cllr Michael McNamara told the meeting that “there are some aspects of the the budget that I can’t defend”. While Claremorris area councillor Pat McHugh said “I have been a loyal supporter of the Government, but I’m not afraid to say there is no way I can defend this budget. There are many issues that have been raised, and they were discussed at meetings of Fianna Fáil councillors around the country, and a number of areas where a hatchet was used when a scalpel should have been.”

A delegation from County Mayo, led by the Cathaoirleach Councillor Joe Mellett, met with the Minister for the Environment John Gormley in Dáil Éireann recently.

Plans to develop the railway goods store in Swinford were met with approval by the four local councillors this week.

The members of the Mayo County Council Environment and Emergency SPC welcomed the publication of the draft report on the River Basin management for the western region at their meeting this week. The committee were given a presentation by Pat Canney, co-ordinator of the western river basin’s district office on the draft report compiled by his office which is currently out for public consultation.
