Barrett stands alone on county council abortion motion
Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett was the only member of either Mayo County Council or Castlebar Town Council to oppose a notice of motion in relation to abortion put before both councils this week. Independent Cllr Frank Durcan who sits on both of the local authorities put forward a notice of motion to both councils stating “that the members resolve, in keeping with the will of the Irish people as emphatically expressed in the referendum of 1983, to oppose any form of legalisation of abortion under any circumstances”.

Barrett and Ruane co-opted on to Castlebar Town Council
Castlebar Town Council was returned to its quota of nine councillors at last week’s monthly meeting of the local authority. Labour’s Harry Barrett and Sinn Féin’s Therese Ruane were co-opted on to the council in place of Johnny Mee and Noel Campbell respectively.

Pedestrian crossings issue raised again in Castlebar
The issue of uncontrolled pedestrian crossings in Castlebar was raised again at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne brought up the issue telling the meeting: “In relation to the report we got on pedestrian crossings last month, there are very clear regulations as to what are pedestrian crossings and none of which are listed comply with that. I propose that we get the road safety officer for Mayo County Council to make a report on these crossings and let him decide if they are safe.”
