The elected members of Castlebar Town Council welcomed the progress on the refurbishment of the Main Street in the town.
Town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting: “I gave a commitment before that I would make Main Street a priority, we have plans to move ahead now and the project is expected to cost in the region of €1.2 to €1.5 million. We will be doing the project on a phased basis and it is hoped it will give the street back to the people, we have a number of sources of funding for it with some sources still in discussion and I hope to report back to you on it at the next meeting.”
Fianna Fáil Cllr Sean Burke welcomed the news, saying: “It will be a great benefit and boost to that part of the town.” These sentiments were echoed by Sinn Féin Cllr Therese Ruane who said: “This is a needed project that will do much for the centre of the town that has been in need of some work for some time. Also not too long ago a report was done on pedestrianising Main Street, which is something that I would be in favour of being tried on a trial basis also in the future.”
Cllr Brendan Heneghan, who was also enthusiastic in his praise for the project, told the meeting: “It’s a great day for Castlebar. It’s now time for us all to play our part. I’ve been pushing for this since the first day I became a councillor and I’m delighted to see it being done.”
