Choosing the right paving is one of the most important decisions you’ll make if you’re renovating your garden or planning a new one. It’s probably the biggest investment you’ll make in terms of cost – not just the cost of buying your paving but of laying it correctly too. Natural flagstone paving and brick or block paving all have their place – but the suggestion I’m making increasingly often to my clients recently is to consider outdoor porcelain paving.

From award winning potters to newly qualified ceramicists, some of the variety and virtuosity of contemporary Irish studio pottery will be on display for two days in Galway during the first week of the Arts Festival.

Galway Potters’ Market, a celebration of studio pottery and ceramics, takes place on Thursday July 19 and Friday 20, at the Fish Market at The Spanish Arch, from 10am to 6.30pm.

In January this year Louisburgh potter and artist Anthony O’Brien travelled to Tatiko, a small village in northern Nigeria to film the traditional potters at work. The Tatiko potters are all women, who work without potters' wheels, kilns or any specialised equipment. The pottery they make is for everyday use, for cooling water, storing oil and grain, and for cooking over the open fire. But what makes their pottery so special is that it is stunningly beautiful, finely decorated in a rich red clay. There are some 50 women potters in Tatiko, making hundreds of pots every week, which are all sold in the local market. People come from all over northern Nigeria to buy their work.

Commons’ Clay Café is a hive of activity for the summer months, with pottery painting, summer camps, parties and the restaurant.

Galwegians will have an opportunity to get hands on and up close with pottery makers at the city’s first potters market, which takes place next week.

On February 24 in the Museum of Country Life, Turlough, adults can take part in a pottery class from 10am to 5pm.

The Midlands only paint-your-own-pottery premises, The Paintworks Studio, was formally opened on Mary Street in Mullingar last Friday (February 5) in front of 70 guests.
