Mayo households collecting less waste and have increased composting
Household waste collected in Mayo County Council area has decreased by 32.1 per cent compared to the 2008 figures, according to the Environmental Protection Agency National Waste Report 2009.

Figures published in 2009 by the Environmental Protection Agency show that 15.2 per cent more household waste was recycled in Mayo in 2007 compared to the previous year. Households in the Mayo area recycled 18,545 tonnes of waste by using green bins, brown bins, home composting, bring banks and civic amenity centres.

Fergus McAllister, Mayo Green Party chairperson, urged the new Westport Town Council to oversee the introduction of a brown bin collection for the town as soon as possible so that bio-waste such as grass cuttings or food can be separated and utilised, instead of going to landfill.
