Mayo households are recycling 34.1 per cent of household waste

Figures published in 2009 by the Environmental Protection Agency show that 15.2 per cent more household waste was recycled in Mayo in 2007 compared to the previous year. Households in the Mayo area recycled 18,545 tonnes of waste by using green bins, brown bins, home composting, bring banks and civic amenity centres.

These figures are announced as the EPA launches it Annual Highlights Report 2008. The report outlines the EPA’s work in the areas of waste management, clean air, protected soil and biodiversity, sustainable use of resources, the integration and enforcement roles of the EPA, and the area of water quality.

The report states that while Ireland is making good progress with recycling, the increase in the amount of waste being brought to landfill means that Ireland is facing significant challenges to meet the requirements of the Landfill Directive to restrict the quantity of biodegradable waste going to disposal.
