County Galway is gearing up for an action-packed week in celebration of Ireland’s biodiversity and natural heritage, from the unique birdlife along the Shannon Callows in East Galway to the wildflowers on the limestone pavement of Inis Meáin.

A BioBlitz survey of Atlantic Technological University’s main Galway campus has revealed a huge array of biodiversity, with participants recording a total of 128 species in one hour at the Old Dublin Road facility.

Councillors have adopted a biodiversity plan to protect and develop the county’s unique plant and animal life up to 2020. The Westmeath Biodiversity Action Plan 2014-2020 identifies the unique natural heritage that exists in the county, and sets out an ambitious framework to protect and enhance the wide range of habitats, plants, and animals in Westmeath.

Roscommon comes alive at the end of May with a 10 day festival to coincide with The Gathering. “The Return of the Rossies” is Roscommon’s flagship Gathering event in association with Roscommon County Council.
