Galway businesses have until Monday (February 24) to register for this year’s Best of Galway Awards, organised by the Galway Advertiser.

For nearly 50 years Monroe’s has been a pivotal landmark in Galway and its influence on the city’s social and music scene seems set to continue. By taking the plunge into expansion the business has transformed itself into a top music venue - a welcoming place where you can not only enjoy a fine pint and a delicious pizza, but also a night of great company and even better music.

Only one week remains for the public to vote for their favourite in each of the six categories of this year’s Galway’s Best Awards. Voting will close next Tuesday, August 31 at midnight.

The inaugural Galway’s Best Awards 2010 will be presented on Friday, September 17 in the newly refurbished Central Park nightclub.

With only the first month of voting over, more than 3,250 supporters have cast their vote online in an effort to determine who is Galway’s Best.

I recently visited the kitchen of a wonderful service called Community Catering from COPE Galway. This is the new name of what used to be the service known as ‘Meals on Wheels’. COPE Galway Community Catering provides daily nutritional support for Galway city's older people. While the service is primarily for older people it is not exclusively so. They also provide meals to anyone who, through disability or injury, is unable to prepare a hot meal for themselves.

Over 300 people attended an awards ceremony at Hotel Kilkenny on Tuesday night where winners of the Keep Kilkenny Beautiful event accepted their awards.
