A story carried in the Mayo Advertiser last week about Tommy O’Donnell from Belmullet, who was born with a rare brain disorder, struck a chord with one resident of Rockfield, Rathbawn Road, Castlebar.

Cadbury Roses and Friends of the Elderly announced the Mayo winner of the 2011 Grandparent of the Year competition. Maureen McAndrew from Belmullet was nominated by her 18-year-old grandchild Holly McAndrew. Her loving entry was highly complimentary of her grandmother: “My granny is a kind and loving person and a great parent and grandparent. She is a remarkable woman who was a young widow and had a hard life but always cared for her 10 children. My 16 cousins and I are very grateful to have her in our lives! She deserves to be grandparent of the year because she looks after us all with her prayers, home-made brown bread, chicken soup and a few euro on pension day! She might be 85 but she is always great fun to be around and I am very thankful to have her!”

A man who was shirtless and whose hands were covered in blood when arrested in the Broadhaven Hotel, Belmullet was before Belmullet District Court this week.

A special evening of music and entertainment in support of the Special Olympic athletes from Erris is taking place in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet on Friday June 11. Andrew Lynskey from Belmullet joined Mayo AC this year and has already established himself in the senior ranks. Other Mayo AC finishers were Dave Huane in 40.30, - fresh from his latest PB, 17.54 in the Athenry 5k the previous Tuesday, PJ Hall, and Christy O'Malley.

William Doherty, a 17-year-old student at Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, was named Senior Student of the Year 2009 for Entrepreneurial Spirit at the Bank of Ireland National Student Awards. Mayo celebrations heightened when footballer Shane Nally from St Colman’s College, Claremorris, was also called to the stage to accept the title of Senior Sport Student of the Year 2009.
