Mayo go looking for vital win in Ennis

The Mayo League will head south to Doora in Ennis tomorrow at 5pm when they take on the Clare League in the second round of the Oscar Traynor Trophy. In their four team group all sides are locked on one point each after a series of 1-1 draws in round one, with Mayo drawing with the Roscommon League, and the Clare League and Galway League also finishing tied at one goal each.

Claremorris who remain in the hunt for promotion to the Elverys Sports Super League booked their place in the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup on Sunday afternoon last when they defeated Manor Rangers 2-1. A last minute Dean Roddy penalty was hugely decisive after he had given them a first half lead. Manor Rangers clawed one back, but Claremorris showed great hunger to steal it at the death thanks to the exploits of Roddy who has been in magnificent form this season. Manulla also progressed to the next round after recording a clinical 2-0 win over Brazukas. Goals from Declan Tonra and Rory Martyn were enough for Tom Healy’s men in a super display by the west Mayo men.

Both Westport Utd and Castlebar Celtic made it a clean sweep of wins for Mayo sides in the FAI Junior Cup on Sunday. However, the newly crowned Super League champions were pushed all the way by Roscommon League outfit Dysart as they needed an 85th minute goal from Mark McNally to steer them home. Danny Scahill and McNally had given Westport a 2-1 lead at the break, but Dysart regrouped and pressed the Covies hard with a brace from Niall Corbett. Mark McNally showed great composure to slot home the winner to put the seal on their fifth round ticket. As their Gaelic football counterparts were clashing with Roscommon county champions Clann na nGael, Castlebar Celtic recorded a 3-1 win over Ballisodare Utd at the IT Sligo astroturf facility on Sunday. Goals from Paul Moran, James Minogue and Jordan Loftus was enough to see the Hoops home, with the sole Ballisodare response coming from Andrew Patton.

Westport United claim the title in style

Westport United retained the Elverys Sports Super League title on Sunday thanks to a 7-1 win over Conn Rangers at the Sports Park. They had to come from behind as Johnnie Cocozzoa gave the North Mayo side an early lead. Westport Utd under the tutelage of John Brennan this season rallied and pushed 3-1 clear at the break thanks to goals from Mark McNally, Joe Lawless and Pat Fitzgerald. It was more of the same in the second half where they put on a show for the Westport faithful. McNally grabbed another along with goals from Jamie Fallon, Danny Scahill and David Hoban wrapping up a comprehensive win.

Mayo league opens Traynor campaign on Sunday

The Mayo League will kick-off their Oscar Traynor Trophy campaign on Sunday when the Roscommon League come to Milebush for a game that will kick-off at 2pm. It has been a number of years since the Mayo League made a dent in this competition and this year they are being managed by former League of Ireland star and international footballer, Joseph N'Do.

In a statement the league said that they were "delighted to have acquired the services of someone with a wide range of skills and experiences gained in leagues across Europe and on the international stage".

Ballina Town remain hot on Westport United’s heels thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over high-flying Manulla on Saturday night. A first half Dwayne Helly goal was crucial for the north Mayo men in a hugely competitive affair. Westport Utd picked up another three points to maintain their position at the summit of the league thanks to a 3-1 win at home to a stubborn Charlestown Athletic side. David Hoban scored twice with Mikey O'Brien grabbing the third goal for Westport. The only black-spot was the straight red card issued to goalkeeper Gary Cunningham in the 90th minute. Tom Towey tucked home the penalty and it was only a token gesture in the end. That loss also saw Charlestown's relegation to the Premier A for next season sealed.

Meanwhile Iorrais Aontaithe came from behind to defeat Ballyheane at the weekend. Ashley Jensen eased Ballyheane clear on 53 minutes before a late flourish by Iorrais Aontaithe was enough to see them home. Brendan Nallen scored direct from a corner in the 76th minute, before Jason Boylan nailed the winner after a mix-up in the Ballyheane defence.

Westport Utd went one step closer towards retaining the league title on Sunday afternoon at a rain-swept Ballyglass where they recorded a comprehensive 5-2 win. Considering that Ballyglass went 1-0 up in the 13th minute and were also reduced to 10 men as referee Damien McGrath flashed red to Danny Scahill, Westport United showed great composure to grind out a result away from home.

With Mayo playing against the Sky Blues on Saturday night there was a somewhat congested Mayo League card on Sunday afternoon. Westport Utd recorded a facile 6-0 win at home to their former fierce rivals Castlebar Celtic on Sunday morning. Dave Hoban fired home four goals in a stunning display, as well as efforts by Phil Keegan and Darren Browne in a superb display by the Covies. Ballina Town were made work for their three points at home to Conn Rangers. A first half Brendan Lavelle strike ultimately proved the difference in a closely fought affair.

FAI AGM- Festival of football takes in the sights of Mayo

Since Sunday evening the FAI have been criss crossing the county as the festival of football, which culminates with Saturday’s FAI AGM in Mayo, got into gear. On Wednesday evening, they stopped off at Pat Quigley Park in Ballyheane to open the new astro-turf facility and the Mayo Advertiser, caught up with FAI Cheif executive John Delaney and former Irish international Ray Houghton to get their views on their week in Mayo.

John Delaney has been suitably impressed by the welcome the people of Mayo have given the FAI and the enthussiam for the game they have seen in the county over the week. “It’s been a great week so far, it feels like we’ve been all over the county. From Ballyhaunis with the intercultural event, Ballyglass, Claremorris and Swinford. The warmth of the recepetion we gothas been fantastic and the standard of the facilites here in Mayo are superb. All you have to look at is the ambitions of the clubs here to make sure that they have top-class facilities not just for their main teams but for the kids starting out because that’s what is really important. From the smallest areas and the smallest clubs, who are filled with great people who do great work. If you look at Partry they put up those dressing rooms in eight weeks, it’s amazing to see. It goes from local to national on Friday, when we turn our attention to the AGM, but the people of Mayo have all come out to suppport us all week. We’ve literally met thousands of people all week, all of them have been great. This year is our second year of bringing the AGM out on the road-last year was great in Kerry but this has surpassed it, I’d say.”
