While the glamour tie of Sunday afternoon will be the all Mayo clash in the Connacht Colleges A final, the B final which throws in at 1.30pm will have plenty of Mayo interest also with St Louis, Kiltimagh, attempting to keep the Mayo stranglehold on the title. The east Mayo school took down the defending champions Rice College, Westport, in the semi-final last week by 0-12 to 0-9 in Ballinrobe and now find themselves in the final on Sunday. Standing in their way is Galway outfit ST Paul’s, Oughterard, who have surprised many this year seeing off what would be considered more vaunted opponents in the shape of St Attracta’s, Tubbercurry, St Nathy’s, Ballaghaderreen, and Summerhill Sligo en route to the final. The St Louis side are managed by former Mayo star Maurice Sheridan and former Ballintubber player Tony Duffy, the duo have guided them to wins over Ballyhaunis Community School, Carrick-on-Shannon, and last week Rice College, and will be hoping to ensure a clean sweep for Mayo on Sunday.

I have been intrigued over the years by the large volumes of people travelling weekly across the water to support, in the main, Glasgow Celtic and English soccer teams. No expense is spared it seems as these die hard supporters make their weekly pilgrimages to London, Manchester, or Liverpool. My 10-year-old son, Johnny, is a supporter of Liverpool so I decided to source a couple of tickets for a home match in Anfield as a Christmas present. I booked the flights last December. Departure was from Knock on Saturday morning with the return flights booked for Sunday lunchtime. I discovered, however, sometime in mid January that Sky Sports, which dictates when matches are played, had moved this fixture to Sunday which meant I had to re-book our flights. When I realised what Ryanair wanted to charge me to change my scheduled flights, I decided to stick with my outbound journey and book separate flights home on the Monday. With an arrival time of 10.45am in Liverpool and loads of time to kill I managed to secure two tickets for the Manchester v Blackburn game on the Saturday evening in Old Trafford. Johnny had got lucky!

With the league more or less wound down for the year, with Corinthians claiming the title and Ballina finishing as the top placed Mayo side in the league and booking their place in the All-Ireland Junior Cup for next season, attention now turns to the Connacht Junior Cup. The competition is now at the quarter-final stage with four Mayo sides still left in the competition, Ballina, Westport, Castlebar and Ballinrobe. With each side avoiding each other in the last eight the possibility of two all Mayo semi-finals exists, but it will be a difficult task.

One side has not won it since 1981, the other came out of a 60 plus year slumber to pick pocket two in a row in 1996 and 1997 but have not been able to get back to the summit in the 12 years since, one of those facts will become history on Sunday. The meeting of St Gerald’s, Castleba,r and St Colman’s, Claremorris, in the Connacht Colleges A final in Flanagan Park this Sunday will pit the best two sides in Mayo in battle for the Aonghus Murphy Cup at 3pm, with Roscommon’s Declan Hunt taking care of duties in the middle of the field.
