Ladies still out in the cold
Fri, Jun 04, 2010
The ongoing saga of the Mayo ladies and their withdrawal from this year’s All Ireland football championship continued this week. On Monday night a meeting of the ladies’ county board saw the top table ask the delegates to reconsider their decision on withdrawing the side from this year’s championship, a request the players made after the meeting with the county board the previous Friday evening. On Tuesday the ladies’ county board issued a statement which said: “A meeting of Mayo Ladies’ County Board was held last night (Monday May 31) where the executive asked delegates, on behalf of the senior panel, to reconsider the decision of the previous meeting to withdraw from the TG4 Senior Championship of 2010. Delegates voted 28 to 9 to uphold the earlier decision. It was also decided to invite an independent committee, made up of Cumann Peil Gael na mBan management to examine the situation within Mayo and to report back to the County Board by September 2010.”

Mayo continued their preparations ahead of their Connacht championship campaign opener against Sligo on Saturday week last Tuesday night when they played Kildare in a three period challenge behind closed doors in Longwood. It was Mayo’s fourth challenge game in 10 days, having previously beaten Cavan, Westmeath, and Dublin. Mayo went down by a point against the Lillywhites in a contest that was played over three 25 minute periods, with a side starting to look like it was taking shape for Saturday week’s game against Sligo. Tom Cunniffe continued at centre half back, flanked on either side by Peader Gardiner and Kevin McLoughlin. Kenneth O’Malley got a run out between the sticks for Mayo while Alan Dillon, who had been nursing an injury, came on to score a point. Donal Vaughn, another who picked up an injury in recent weeks, also made an appearance from the bench. Andy Moran was Mayo’s top scorer, kicking 1-4, while Conor Mortimer chipped in with five points from frees. The challenge game was the sixth in 10 days that many of the Mayo players had taken part in, including club games. They will get a break from club action ahead of the Sligo game with the club action in Mayo reverting back to the secondary league ahead of their championship clash and the start of the club senior and intermediate championship proper in a fortnight’s time around the county.

Mayo would still be allowed compete in this year’s Connacht senior football championship, if a solution to the impasse between the county board and the players can be resolved in time, the Mayo Advertiser has learned this week. “We received an email this week on Monday morning from the Mayo County Board informing us that they would be withdrawing from this year’s championship,” Ita Hannon, secretary of the Connacht Ladies’ Council, told the Mayo Advertiser. When asked if Mayo would be readmitted into the championship, she confirmed that the Connacht Council would let them back in if they asked. “Of course we would let them back in. We’d never stop anyone from playing football.”
Last Thursday night (May 20) the Mayo Ladies’ GAA Board met where the delegates of the clubs voted by 26-5 to withdraw Mayo from the senior championship this year. The vote followed the board’s inability to convince Pat Costello to reconsider his position after he resigned following the end of Mayo’s league campaign which saw them hold on to their division one status, but end the competition with a severe beating from Cork.

Iorras Aontaithe stayed top of the Mayo Super League last weekend after they came from two goals down to beat Snugboro United in Carne last weekend, while champions Ballina Town were surprisingly overturned by Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park. Iorras have a 100 per cent record from their six games so far and are now four points clear of Ballina and have a game in hand. But they had to do it the hard way last weekend; Sean Curry put the visitors one up earlier on and they doubled their lead shortly after when David Colleran headed home their second.

The senior inter county championship has got off to a predictably drab start. Isn’t it a shame that we never have any fanfare attached to the commencement of our showcase GAA competition? The GAA just do the marketing thing any way at all. And looking at some of the attendances so far this year, one must draw the conclusion that it is time GAA HQ smartened up their act in this regard.
The games themselves have been quite ordinary, with all results running to fairly predictable outcomes. What we have witnessed however is that league and championship form are miles apart. For instance, I thought Meath looked particularly good yesterday as they fairly easily disposed of the Offaly challenge. I will accept that their defence looked fairly porous at times, but any team that has to deal with the scoring threat of Niall McNamee will have their hands full over the 70 minutes. He is a gifted footballer, (obviously taking his mother’s genes in this regard as I went to school with his dad and he could hardly kick a football out of his way!). Offaly, however, were over reliant on one class forward. Meath on the other hand have a plethora of them. Big Joe Sheridan is a giant of a forward who will haunt full backs before this championship concludes. When you throw in the likes of Stephen Bray, Shane O’Rourke, and the brilliant free taking of Cian Ward, I imagine that bookies were quick off their marks to reduce the odds on Meath winning a Leinster championship at the very least this year.

Castlebar Celtic will welcome Bohemians to the Celtic Park on Sunday for their second game in the Newstalk A league on Sunday afternoon. Celtic opened up the their league campaign last Sunday with a 1-1 draw away to Sporting Fingal in Dublin. An under strength Celtic side saw manager Declan Kilkelly have to go between the sticks due to an injury crisis. Chris Rowland opened the scoring for Celtic after 20 minutes and went in at the break leading. Sporting Fingal had former Irish international Glenn Crowe in their ranks, and Kilkelly was very happy with the performance of his centre half, pairing against such an established League of Ireland performer. “Declan Flynn and Shane Moran, who it has to be remembered is only 18, did really well for us against Sporting Fingal,” he said. “They are a top side who have come on a lot since they came into the league a number of years ago.” Having to go into goal wasn’t something that Kilkelly wanted to do, and he hopes he doesn’t have to again. “It wasn’t something I really wanted to do, but you have to do these things and I did my best for the lads. I’m still a bit sore after it. I took a bang in the ribs near the end which is still a bit sore at the minute.”
