It's a game that lasts 70 minutes and both sides have 15 players each and anything can happen — once upon a time that was how things were looked at before a big game. Sure, one team could have beaten all before and behind them in style, while the other scraped through to get to the big day. But at the end of the day all that mattered was what happened over the 70 minutes, that's still true today but only in part.

With nine minutes left to go, Mayo pulled themselves level with Meath in Semple Stadium and the game hung firmly in the balance as a brave Mayo led by the excellent Fergal Boland put themselves in with a shot of claiming the Richie McElligott Cup. But over the closing stretch of the game Meath found a second wind to power home to a deserved win, even if the scoreline was a bit flattering to them as Mayo left plenty of gaps at the back as they went chasing the game in the final few minutes.

All-Ireland final hype is about to enter fever pitch. Nothing beats preparing for a final, whether your a player, supporter, county board or club official. It gives everyone a pep in their step. The players and officials have the trivial matters out of the way and will have their match day suits ready for the off and press commitments done and dusted. For them now it's all about focused minds and mentally preparing themselves for the biggest day of their footballing lives.

Mayo GAA have lined up a series of fundraising events in the lead up to and after next Sunday's All Ireland senior football final in Croke Park. After the final the official Mayo GAA team banquet will take place in Citywest hotel on Sunday evening September 18. Tables of ten cost €800 or tickets can be purchased individually for €80. He's got All Ireland winners medals in the bag at both hurling and football; he also picked up a u21 football All Ireland winners medal earlier this year and had some time with the senior football panel in the early months of the year; then followed that up with a Nicky Rackard Cup winners medal with the Mayo senior hurlers in Croke Park and is now going to looking for an All Ireland u21B winners medals with the Mayo hurlers tomorrow. It's not been a bad few years for Tooreen's David Kenny on the football and hurling fields around the country.

After the disappointment of 2015 for hurling in the county when the senior team were relegated out of the Christy Ring Cup, this year has seen a rebirth of the game in the county, with the senior side winning the Nicky Rackard Cup in Croke Park and making their way back to the Ring Cup for next year.
Tomorrow afternoon in the home of hurling the Mayo u21s are looking to cap a memorable season when they take part in the All Ireland u21B final with the Richie McElligot Cup up for grabs in Semple Stadium. Standing in their way is a fancied Meath side, but Mayo come into the game full of confidence on the back of impressive wins over Kildare and Roscommon in their last two games.

Balla and Louisburgh booked their places in the final of the Mayo Junior Football Championship on Saturday evening in MacHale Park after a double header of semi-finals in the county grounds. The first game of the evening was the meeting of last years Junior B Champions Ballycastle and Balla in a contest that went right down to the wire.

The Mayo senior footballers are ready to go for their All Ireland final meeting with Dublin in a fortnight's time. At the county's press briefing ahead of the final on Wednesday night, manager Stephen Rochford fielded questions on the situation in the camp with Diarmuid O'Connor's fitness being the first question up, and the Crossmolina man replied saying: "Diarmuid is alive and well. We’ve trained three times since the Tipperary game and he’s been in all those sessions as has everyone else. We have 33 fit guys at this moment in time thank God."

"Some people think I'm mad, facing the car for home on a Friday evening at 4.30pm, but during the summer where else would you rather be than at home in Louisburgh, as long as the weather is good of course." Austin O'Malley has been there and done it all before but he is still making the long trip home from his home on the east coast each weekend to try to help get Louisburgh back over the line in the junior ranks of Mayo football.

And then there were four, the Mayo junior championship is rattling its way to a conclusion, with last weekend's replayed quarter-final between Ballycastle and Crossmolina sorting out the last spot in the final four. The clubs in Mayo were informed of their ticket allocations for the up coming All Ireland final at last nights County Board meeting in MacHale Park. Outlining how the distribution of the tickets will work, Mayo GAA secretary Vincent Neary opened his remarks by telling the club delegates present that Mayo’s allocation will be “significantly” down on the allocation from 2013.
