Anyone who logged on to the discussion board on www.castlebar.ie this week will have seen a lengthy discussion on events in Castlebar last Friday night surrounding a Junior Cert disco, when hundreds of teenagers from across the region converged on Castlebar. Anyone who was around the town that night couldn’t fail to notice the large numbers that were out and about, some of them were very drunk, but plenty more were as sober as the day they were born.

Cribben to take the chain today

Today will be a proud day for the Cllr John Cribben and his family when he takes the chain as Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months. Cllr Cribben will take over as Cathaoirleach from Cllr Joe Mellett at the Mayo County Council’s AGM. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday, Cribben said. “It’ll be a proud day for me, my family, and my supporters who have elected me to the council. I look forward to the year serving the people of Mayo to the best of my abilities locally, nationally and internationally.”

Wednesday morning saw the lampposts and pillars of the towns, villages, and roads of Mayo covered in faces smiling at us asking for our number one and two, three and four, in whatever order we prefer.

Are you afraid that you won’t be able to afford to go to third level? Is the pension levy crippling you? Are you happy with the status quo? Do you think the Government are doing a good job? Could they do better? Who could do better? Are they all the same?

Claremorris, Friday night, and Irish singing and dancing was alive. All that could be heard from the glamourous confines of the McWilliam Park Hotel was chattering and excited conversation which definitely wasn’t spoken in the English language, but which sounded vaguely familiar. From outside you would be forgiven for thinking we’d been transported to the Connemara Gaeltacht. But inside it was a different story altogether. The room was awash with glamour befitting any danceroom in the nation, and it was the pride that each and every person in attendance had for our Irish culture, that was felt immediately upon arrival.
