Talk on pension reform for women in Claremorris
A talk on pension rights for women will be held in Curam, Claremorris, on February 7 at 7.30pm. Hosted by the Claremorris Women’s Group, the issue of women not qualifying for the full State pension will be discussed by speakers from the National Women’s Council of Ireland, MABS, and Citizens Information. Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo, Lisa Chambers, has called on the Government to put farmers first and ensure that outstanding GLAS payments are processed as quickly as possible. Speaking on the matter this week, Deputy Chambers said: "I submitted parliamentary questions to Minister Creed asking how many GLAS applications in Mayo are yet to receive payment, and the figures show that of the 5,537 applications made in Mayo for advance payment in 2017, 1,234 applicants have yet to receive an advance payment. That is over 20 per cent of the applications."

The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life has made a fascinating collection of early travel and tourism posters, used to promote Ireland in the infancy of the tourism sector here, available to view online for the first time. The posters form part of the National Folklife Collection and were previously on display at the museum in the exhibition Come Back to Erin: Irish Travel Posters of the 20th Century, which was curated by the late Dr Séamas Mac Philib.

The bright, warm and long evenings during the month of May are very much on the minds of choirs this month as the countdown to the choir entry deadline of Wednesday January 31 draws near. The organisers of the now well-established Mayo International Choral Festival have been inundated with inquiries for this May, with many returning choirs, which is most unusual considering that choirs tend to visit a different location each year.

Last week John McHale (captain of Castlebar Golf Club) signed a contract with Dar Golf for the development of a reconfigured course east of the existing course at Rocklands in Castlebar. The new development became necessary when part of the existing course was included in the compulsory purchase order for the new Turlough to Westport road. As part of an agreement reached between the club and Mayo County Council additional lands were acquired for the club by the council.

For over a year young musicians from Ballina and throughout Mayo have been taking advantage of an exciting new creative facility. The Core is a resource for young musicians and schools in the Mayo community. It is run under the auspices of Music Generation Mayo and housed within Ballina Arts Centre. At The Core, young people aged 12 to 18 years can engage in instrumental tuition, workshops, camps, and regular performance opportunities such as open mics and showcases. The Core also has a dedicated members only creative space which is kitted out with high quality equipment. The resource has lots of instruments including electric guitars, drums, piano, synths, a range of amplification, PA, and studio recording equipment.
