Female representation falls from five to two for this term

There will only be two female councillors on Mayo County Council for its new term starting June 2019, which is down from five female councillors who were elected in the 2014 local elections.

Duffy takes Ballina by storm and O'Malley strikes back in Westport

After the drawn out process of the previous day - where most of the time was spent sorting ballots before the counting began things moved much smooter on Sunday, with the Westport count being completed in the early evening and the Ballina count not long after 10pm and just the Claremorris count which going by the tally figures looked a forgone conclusion wating to be finished in the early hours of the morning.

At the end of the first full day of counting in the local elections in Mayo one third of the seats were filled, with the final seats of the day coming in the early hours of Sunday morning when the results were declared in the Castlebar Local Electoral Area.

South Mayo battle for half a dozen seats

Claremorris has seen a boundary change like the rest of the local areas for today's election with the north eastern part of of the constituency moving into the Swinford area, and long with it, Sinn Fein councillor Gerry Murray, who took 1,971 first preferences and was elected on the first count five years ago, as were Cllr Patsy O'Brien and Cllr Richard Finn.
