Scéim Éadan Siopaí Bhéal an Mhuirthead, a joint initiative between Údarás na Gaeltachta and Mayo County Council designed to promote the visibility of the Irish language through traditional and modern shop front design, was officially launched in Belmullet by Pádraig Ó hAoláin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta and Des Mahon, Manager of Mayo County Council.

Garda jeep rammed during high-speed chase

A 39-year-old man who led gardaí on a dangerous car chase through Partry, Kilmaine and Shrule ramming a garda jeep in the process, was fined a total of €4,000 at Ballinrobe district court this week, disqualified from driving for 12 years and sentenced to six months in prison to run consecutively with a six month sentence which he is currently serving.

23k awarded to Mayo youth organisations

Three youth organisations in the Mayo area have been awarded €23,323 through the Artist in Youth Work Residency Award run by NYCI’s Youth Arts programme. Castlebar Neighbourhood Youth Project has received €10,000 to create an indoor installation in Ballyhaunis using animation and puppetry. Youthreach Kiltimagh has been awarded €6,323 to provide young people to work with two local artists to enable the group to create a performance piece based on samba drumming and costume making for the St Patrick’s Day parade, and Louisburgh Community Project has received €7,000 to interpret the life of Granuaille by creating an installation incorporating music, puppetry, movement and multi-media.
