On Tuesday evening May 12 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm there will be a ladies’ soccer tournament at the astro turf pitch in Claremorris. This is a fun event which is being hosted by the Mayo Sports Partnership, Community and Enterprise, FAI, and the Family Resource Centre Claremorris.

Clashes expected in Belmullet this weekend as protestors threaten to remove fence

Following escalating tensions over the past few weeks between anti-Shell factions and IRMS security staff working at the Shell E&P pipeline landfall site at Glengad, further clashes are imminent this weekend after Shell to Sea are nationally and internationally endeavouring to drum up support for what they are calling a day of action, at 6pm on Saturday, May 9, to remove the fencing around the Glengad site.

O’Mahony hits out at dead rent money paid for decentralisation

Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has hit out at the spending of rent on buildings by the Government for offices for decentralisation when the rent being paid on these buildings could be used to fund the projects already agreed on by the Government. Almost €10 million has been spent nationwide on the rent of offices by the Office of Public Works on behalf of the Government since the decentralisation programme began. O’Mahony told the Mayo Advertiser this week: “This is a huge issue in relation to the spending of money that could be used to get these offices in a permeant location. I’m fully supportive of the issue of decentralisation, but not in the way it has been done.”

‘Shocking’ overtaking of school bus by lorry driver

A lorry driver, with a large load of logs and a trailer attached, who tailgated a bus — carrying 20 school children — dangerously overtook the bus while was there was oncoming traffic, and then cut directly in front of the bus, causing the bus to swerve onto the hard shoulder, was disqualified from driving by Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday for the incident which she described as “so shocking”.

Suspended sentence for man convicted of drink driving while disqualified

A Charlestown man who pleaded guilty to drunk driving, driving without insurance, and driving while disqualified was fined a total of €1,500, disqualified from driving for six years, and handed a three month prison sentence suspended for 12 months in Ballyhaunis District Court this week.

On Wednesday night, May 6, a garage on the Westport to Castlebar road was broken into. Nothing was removed from the premises. A garage in the Claremorris area was entered some time between May 1 and May 5, where a number of items were taken.

Fine for failing to produce licence

A Hollymount woman who failed to appear in Ballyhaunis District Court to face a charge of having no driving licence and failing one produce it at a Garda station was convicted and fined in her absence in court this week. The court was told that gardai stopped a car being driven by Martina Jennings, Lisaturna, Hollymount, at 10.44am on October 11 2008 in Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis. Gardai demanded that she produce her driving licence at a station of her choice which she failed to do. For having no driving licence Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Jennings €170, for failure to produce her licence she convicted and fined her €50.
