Lithuanian event in Ballinrobe

A major event dedicated to Felix Waitkus will take place in Ballinrobe town starting at 6pm on Saturday October 10 and finishing at 4.30pm on October 11. The event is dedicated to Felix Waitkus and his flight over the Atlantic Ocean. Seventy four years ago American Lithuanian Waitkus successfully flew over the Atlantic; unfortunately due to bad weather conditions he was forced to make an emergency landing in an open field near Ballinrobe town.

Mobility awareness

Following on from European Mobility Week which took place this week Mayo County Council with the support of the Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government, is introducing the provision of bicycle racks in Ballina, Castlebar, and Westport to promote the use of bicycles as a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transport. A pilot rural transport initiative will be introduced from November to February in isolated rural communities to local centres of population in the Belmullet/Achill areas, and there will also be a public awareness initiative promoting the proper use of pedestrian footpaths and disabled parking spaces in the county.

The Tidy Towns committee will be holding an anti gum day on Saturday October 3. At 1.30pm, anti gum sachets will be distributed free of charge on the junction of Main Street and Market Square. They will also be distributed to the schools of the town during the week.
