There will be a health fair for carers on January 27 in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar between 11am and 3pm. There will be a number of different stalls including beauticians and hairdressers from Westport CFE, Specsavers Castlebar, Deaf Hear, chiropody from Footworks Clinic in Ballina, and Croi. Ballina Neighbourhood Youth Project is running a common sense parenting course beginning in February. The course runs for six weeks, one morning a week in the NYP on Pearse Street. Common sense parenting provides parents of children aged six to 16 years with a menu of proved techniques that will aid them in building good family relationships, preventing and correcting misbehaviour, using consequences to improve behaviour, teaching self control, and staying calm. The ecumencial service for Mayo Roscommon Hospice Let Love Shine a Light appeal takes place on Sunday January 18 in St John’s Rest and Care Centre, Knock, commencing at 3.45pm. All those for whom lights were sponsored on the Tree of Light will be prayed for at the service. All are welcome.

Lynda Huxley, of GMIT Campus, Castlebar, will give a talk called The Amazing Swifts of Mayo on Tuesday January 20 at 8pm at the Westport Coast Hotel. These amazing birds do not touch land for the first two years of their lives, and only do so later to build nests and raise their young. There has been a 46 per cent drop in the population of these birds in Ireland, and Huxley will discuss the reasons for this, conservation measures to preserve the birds, and tell us about these harbingers of spring. A trialogue group is a neutral space where communities can gather to develop their understanding of mental health issues, the challenges of maintaining mental health, and to transform thinking on developing better services and healthy communities.
