World Heart Day

To coincide with World Heart Day on Thursday, September 29, Croí and HSE West Mayo PCCC are inviting members of the public to a free public meeting and open forum in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, at 8pm. The guest speaker will be Dr Pat Nash, consultant cardiologist, University Hospital, Galway. The theme of this year’s World Heart Day is One World, One Home, One Heart, which according to Croí, emphasises the important role we all can play in reducing the burden of heart disease and stroke on ourselves, our families, and our economy.

Irish language youth club

Cumann na bhFiann, Ireland's largest Irish language youth organisation, has opened a new club in Caisleán an Bharraigh. It will run on Tuesday evenings in Gaelscoil Raifteirí between 5pm and 6.30pm. This club will be run by Barra MacThiarnáin and promises to be a fun filled, enjoyable, club run in a safe environment. It is open to all students from fifth class in primary school right through to Leaving Cert classes, regardless of the level of Irish the student may have. Chi-gong workshops for Western Care Association

Arend Wijmenga, a fourth dan grade tai chi instructor, is conducting two two-hour Chi-gong workshops in aid of Western Care in the Ruby Room, Royal Theatre, Castlebar, tomorrow (Saturday) from 10.30am – 12.30pm and 1.30pm – 3.30pm. Chi-gong seeks to heal the body by balancing the energy-flow within, strengthen what is deficient, and reduce excess. All this occurs through movement and breathing exercises whose primary aim is the systematic moving and balancing of the chi (energy) in the human body. The ba duan jin exercises can be practised standing and sitting, making them beneficial and suitable for all fitness levels and abilities. This programme cost €5 and will be on in Ballina Family Resource Centre on Monday September 19, at 12 noon for one hour. The class will consist of scenic walking. Ballina Family Resource Centre is currently providing a facility for Mayo Cancer Support Association Outreach Services to run a counselling service in Ballina. The counselling service is available every Tuesday morning in Ballina FRC. This service is available to cancer patients and members of their family who have been affected by cancer and need support. Integrated dance at Mayo Culture Night

Croí Glan, one of Ireland’s leading integrated dance companies, will join forces this September with young people from Ridgepool Training Centre and Danceworld, the west coast’s largest and most successful dance and performance academy to create a new dance piece. At a day long workshop on September 22, disabled and non-disabled dancers will get together in a participatory form of dance that encourages trust and self-expression. Out of this experience will emerge a work which will be performed as part of the Mayo Culture Night on September 23 in Ballina Arts Centre at 8pm.
