Drive with your lights on all day

The old adage about pedestrian safety - Be Safe, Be Seen! - is as true for motorists as it is for pedestrians. With the winter solstice falling only last week (December 21), it means that daylight time starts to get slightly longer each day.

However, Continental Tyres Ireland is advising motorists not to wait until darkness to turn on their lights. Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland, commented: "A lot of newer cars come with daytime running lights (DTRLs) as standard, this means they have lights on once the engine is running even during daylight time. This is a huge boost to road safety as the old adage for pedestrian safety: 'Be safe, be seen' is equally true for motorists and other road-users.

New car registrations for the first five months of the year totalled almost 100,000, up 23 per cent on the same period last year, official statistics released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) confirm.

New car registrations for the month of May were down 6 per cent( 6,532) compared to May 2015 (6,919) while total new car sales are up 23 per cent (99,740) on the same period last year (80,889).
