Mayo rescue shelters benefit from fundraising

The results are in; Irish dog lovers have raised a whopping €100,000 in cash and food donations for animal rescue centres across the country as part of the fifth annual Pedigree Adoption Drive, with €4,750 of this year’s grant being awarded to Ainmhithe Animal Rescue, Ballina; Mayo SPCA, Ballyhaunis; and North West SPCA, Ballina.

Strong link between stress levels and digestive health issues

Irish people are feeling the effects of the recession, working longer hours and juggling more family commitments than ever before. According to a recent attitudinal survey conducted by Danone, 58 per cent of those in Mayo who claim they are always stressed, recognise that their digestive health has an impact on their stress levels. Sixty per cent of those in Mayo who claimed that they were “stressed all or most of the time” spend less than 15 minutes eating their main meal even though 52 per cent are aware that rushing a meal has a very negative effect on the digestive system.

Fianna Fáil has published legislation to bring about stricter controls on the use of sunbeds. Health spokesperson Billy Kelleher says: “The use of sunbeds needs to be controlled to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. One hundred and forty thousand people in Ireland use sunbeds on a regular basis and of these, 20 per cent are between the ages of 15 to 24 years.
