Mayo Youth Orchestra shines at international music festival

The Mayo Youth Orchestra have done themselves and their county proud at an international music congress held in The Netherlands. Performing amongst a group of highly talented orchestras from all corners of Europe at the eighth European Festival of Amateur Orchestras, the young group’s blend of fun and lighthearted music mixed in with a bit of Irish traditional music went down well. A highly enjoyable event for all (May 21-24) held in Dalfsen in the east of The Netherlands concluded with an impromptu performance of traditional Irish music and dancing, as friends were made from across the Continent through classical and more contemporary music.

The Rye played at the event in January and went down a storm with hard-loving music enthusiastic. If you like the Pogues and The Soggy Bottom Boys than this will be right up your street. For those of you who missed the group’s performance first time around are in for a real treat from once these guys take to the stage at Bar Ritz! The Rye are an extraordinary five-piece from the west coast of Ireland, they present one of the freshest sounds and most exciting approaches to Irish music heard in recent times.

Imprints launched in Claremorris

The original idea for Imprints came from Lola Donoghue (art teacher at St Colman’s). When her submission for a creative engagement project with Leaving Cert Applied students for their visual art class was accepted, she got Pat Keane (deputy principal) on board to guide the project through his native Claremorris from an historical and cultural perspective. Fotissima Photography, which comprises Lola Donoghue and Majella Kelly, were the collaborating artists involved. All equipment was supplied by them and students were taught the basic principles of photography, from the creative to the technical. They followed through the project from the shooting stage to the digital processing on computers and the eventual framing and presentation of the work.

Families from every corner of the country will converge on the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough, Castlebar. Free entry, children’s activities, storytelling, music, face painting, demonstrations and workshops make this the best fun and best value festival around. Penn milks it for all he’s worth
Sean Penn won the Best Actor gong for his touching portrayal of gay activist Harvey Milk but it’s director Gus Van Sant who is the real star of Milk. The screenplay unfolds beautifully in a series of flashbacks and vignettes. That’s not to say that Penn isn’t at his very best here – he brings warmth and humour to Milk’s long-running fight to dismantle barriers on his way to becoming the first gay man to win a US election. Josh Brolin also turns in a powerful performance as Dan White - Milk’s notorious nemesis.

The story of Captain Ahab on his epic journey of revenge in pursuit of the great white whale as told by the mysterious Ishmael, Moby Dick is an adventure story of biblical proportions.
