The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland Stars of our Bars talent competition, in association with Smithwick’s, got off to a flying start last week with aspiring stars queuing at the doors of pubs across Mayo to showcase their talent and claim their stake on the fabulous prizes on offer. Competitions took place in pubs across Mayo last weekend with a wide selection of entrants such as dancers, singers, choirs, bands and comedians all vying for a spot in the county final.

A Wake in the West hits Dublin

St Patrick’s Drama Group Westport are honoured to be invited by The Mayo Association Dublin to perform in Liberty Hall Dublin, with their wonderful production of A Wake In The West. After over 20 sell-out performances from Westport, The Royal Theatre Castlebar, London and Chicago, St Patrick’s Drama Group resurrect this performance to thrill and delight an audience like never before. This play is like no other and their performance will leave everyone laughing for a long time afterwards. And now due to huge demand it is back better than ever with the original cast performing the one and only A Wake In The West. Before they go to Liberty Hall, Dublin they will stage the production for two nights only in Scoil Phadraig, Altamont Street, Westport, on Wednesday March 10 and Thursday March 11 before staging their third night on Saturday March 13 in Liberty Hall.

Susan Tiger exhibition throughout March
Throughout the month of March, Ballina Arts Centre will host The Shape of Things, an exhibition of work by Mayo-based artist Susan Tiger. Susan Tiger’s work comprises drawings consisting mainly of acrylic paint and graphite on paper. These intimate drawings of various objects, which recount the artist’s personal experiences and memories, are simple, yet meaningful. The images work together with their poetic titles to form an evocative narrative. Images appear to float on the white sheets of paper and instil a sense of quietude as the viewer encounters each of these works.

New exhibition inspired by Bellacorick power station to open in Belmullet

Bellacorick: Impressions of a Place is the title of a new exhibition of drawing, painting, and photography by Betty Gannon, Michael Gannon, and Ian Wieczorek, on show at Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, from Friday March 5 to Wednesday March 31. The exhibition is the result of authorised visits to the decommissioned power station during 2008 and 2009, and the three Mayo artists have created their own personal visual responses to the iconic building’s structure and former function.

Jedward are coming to town

The stars of the last season of the X Factor, Jedward, will be taking to the stage of the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on Tuesday night April 6. The duo, who caused a national sensation with their gravity defying quiffs and energetic performances on last year’s X Factor have recently released their first single “Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)” and scored a massive hit on the charts and radio waves.

Jedward’s version of the track has been produced by Nigel Wright, famed for his work with Take That, Boyzone and his long association with Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as his role as musical director of The X Factor since 2004. Louis Walsh said: “Jedward really captured the public’s imagination while on The X Factor and love them or hate them you can’t deny that they were the talking point of the series. As ‘Under Pressure’ was the track that really catapulted the boys to fame it seemed only fitting to release the song as their first single.”

Crimlin community arts night out at the Linenhall

The Crimlin Community Arts Music Collective presents From the Ocean to the Fringe at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Saturday February 27 at 8pm. Crimlin Community Arts is a community music collective of over nine bands including Batafada, Bata Óg, Rockafada, Na Ciotógaí, The Banned Joe Band and Píba Ríba. They cater for local musicians of all tastes and ages. Genres include samba, rock, folk, traditional and pipe band music as well as a fusion of all of these and more. Since forming in 2006, they have performed locally and at international festivals in Spain, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland and more recently at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in Scotland. The Volvo Ocean Race Festival and the Mary from Dungloe International Festival were also major performances for the collective in 2009.

The Priests’ rise to global stardom has been documented across the world. They have sold over two million albums and appeared on TV shows with artists from Tom Jones to The Killers including Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. After appearing in The Royal Theatre last March, they are coming back to Castlebar. Family affair at the Linenhall

Top Irish violinist Geraldine O’Grady and her daughter and fellow-violinist Oonagh Keogh join forces for a very special concert the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, February 11 at 8pm. Geraldine O’Grady has been in the forefront of Irish music since she graduated from the Paris Conservatoire with the coveted Premier Prix and First Place, and has had a distinguished international career as recitalist and soloist with major symphony orchestras. Geraldine’s daughter, Oonagh Keogh, is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and has an honours MA from the University of Limerick. She has performed extensively as a soloist and is a member of the much-acclaimed Irish Chamber Orchestra.
