Mayo manufacturer PEL scoops top prize in Dubai

Local manufacturers PEL Waste Reduction Equipment, from Balla, Co Mayo, have been awarded the ‘best new innovation award’ at this year’s Gulfood event. Gulfood is the world’s largest food and hospitality show, which took place in the Dubai World Trade Centre, UAE this week. With more than 4,400 companies from some 120 countries exhibiting at the event, the team from PEL were delighted that their product the ‘Baby Jaws’ was selected as a winner at Gulfood 2014.

PEL manufactures a full range of equipment for reducing waste costs and the Baby Jaws is part of the PEL bottle crusher range which reduces bottle volume by 5:1. The Baby Jaws fits under the bar counter and allows staff to reduce bottle volume at source. All of the glass can be recycled and processed back into bottles. PEL has teamed up with Orwell International managing director Steve Lynch who has appointed TSSC as importers and distributors of the PEL product range in the UAE. Electric Escapes, a Westport based company that offers cycling hire and tours on its electric bikes, was part of a seven strong delegation of Irish tourist companies that joined Tourism Ireland at the 2014 Telegraph Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show in London recently. This was the first time that Tourism Ireland had a presence at the four-day event – the largest exhibition in Britain for adventure and outdoors enthusiasts – which attracts some 55,000 visitors each year. It was an ideal opportunity to highlight Mayo and Ireland to those who want to get away from the stress of a busy life and are interested in active experiences and exciting exploration of the countryside.

Patty Cross celebrates forty years with P O’Connor and Son

P O’Connor and Son, solicitors in Swinford, are congratulating Patty Cross, their office manager, who is with the legal firm for 40 years this month. Ms Cross, who lives in Foxford, started with the firm as a shorthand typist immediately after finishing secretarial school. The firm has developed throughout her time with it and she has been instrumental in ensuring the quality service, including steering it to achieve the Quality Mark in 1993 through to 1999 and other awards.

Ms Cross is much respected and liked by all her colleagues and the clients of the firm. Patrick O’Connor, managing partner, thanked her for all her good work and acknowledged that he realised who the ‘real boss’ was of the firm.

Five Mayo hotels pick up awards at CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence

At a reception in Dublin Castle this week, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring presented plaques to 80 winners at the 24th CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence. Twelve overall category winners (gold awards) from around the country were chosen according to feedback from 28,000 customers on more than 450 providers of accommodation, dining, tours, and attractions. Silver merit awards were presented to those achieving more than 90 per cent in the surveys.

There were five silver merit award winning hotels from Mayo. The hotels were Ashford Castle, the Clew Bay Hotel, Hotel Westport, and Knockranny House Hotel. Westport House won a silver merit award in the visits category of the awards.
