Men still ‘three times more likely’ than women to set up in business

Women are more likely to become entrepreneurs if they personally know other women entrepreneurs, according to new research from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. This fact is now being seized on by organisers of National Women’s Enterprise Day taking place in Limerick later this month which will showcase the stories of five female entrepreneurs in an effort to help boost the number of women setting up their own businesses in Ireland.

IT professionals are slow to move from paper records

A new survey among IT professionals in Ireland and the UK has found that 86 per cent of senior IT professionals are still reliant on paper records, with over half of these (51 per cent) stating that they are very reliant. Just one per cent of respondents stated that they “hardly ever” have to rely on paper records while the remaining 13 per cent admitted being “occasionally reliant”. The research was carried out by document management software company Version One among 86 senior IT professionals across a range of UK and Irish public and private sector organisations.

Foxford man wins forestry award

Mr Michael Boyle of Foxford, Co Mayo, has been awarded the Connaught Provincial Award in the annual RDS Forest Service Irish Forestry Awards. Originally planting four and a half hectares in 1988, Mr Boyle’s plantation has now grown to over eight hectares made up of a mixture of Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine, ash, and sycamore.
