Mayo people urged to reclaim their tax

Millions of euro go unclaimed every year by the Irish public primarily due to an apathetic outlook or lack of awareness of entitlements. They are losing out hugely when compared with their more proactive citizens who are claiming back an average of €550 in tax entitlements, according to tax specialist www.taxback.com which has just released the results of its TaxBack index which takes a look over the last half decade to see who has been chasing the Revenue for what he/she is owed.

With a number of businesses around Mayo really struggling at the moment, one Castlebar auctioneer has claimed that rising rates and operation charges are set to test the commercial sector to its limits. At next Monday’s budget meeting a 10 per cent increase in water charges is to be proposed for adoption by members. According to Castlebar Chamber of Commerce member Tommy Collins the big problem for businesses at the moment is that there is simply little or no incentive for job creation.

A new business was launched in Westport over Christmas when Enda Kenny TD officiated at the opening of engineering business Horizon West, a high tech start-up delivering technical support services to manufacturers in the life sciences, electronics, and other knowledge based sectors. Horizon West expects to double its current workforce to 20 within the next year.

Well known Ballinasloe butcher Joe Hayes is the driving force behind the National Butchery Academy which is offering 50 places for unemployed people on a new Industrial Meat Processing course starting in January. The National Butchery Academy was recently launched by Eamon O Cuív TD, Minister for Social Protection, and applicants are expected from the entire region including Mayo which has a strong tradition in the meat industry.
The FETAC level 5 course will cover all butchery skills needed to start a career in the industry. It is being run in conjunction with the Danish Meat Trade College, Roskilda, which gives it Europass status. It is open to anyone over the age of 18 with a Junior Certificate who has been receiving unemployment benefits for at least three months.
