Agencies thanked as Council confirm Moy oil spill probe continues

Mayo County Council is continuing its investigations in an oil spillage on the Moy earlier this month.

Independent councillor Gerry Ginty raised the issue at the March meeting of the Ballina Municipal District this week asking for an update on the progress of the investigation into the spill.

Director of services for Mayo County Council, Tom Gilligan told the meeting that the council were continuing to investigate the incident.

"There was an unfortunate incident where there was a spill, we have been working with the environment section of the council and other agencies on this. There was a very quick response to the spill when we were notified and a boom was placed across the river to contain it and that is ongoing.

Mr Gilligan also informed the meeting that an investigation into the source of the spill was continuing by the council. He also paid tribute to all involved in the clean-up effort so far.

Cllr Michael Loftus told the meeting that the Gráinne Uaile sub aqua club had a boat out on the water within 20 minutes of getting a call from the council to help them put the boom in place, and they have been assisting on a number of occasions since then to ensure it stays in place.
