Worsening mumps outbreak can be prevented

Meningitis Research Foundation is concerned to note that mumps cases continue to rise significantly above levels seen in recent years. According to the current Health Protection Surveillance Centre Weekly Infectious Disease Report, 834 cases of mumps have been reported to date compared to 55 by the same time last year, with 60 per cent of cases having been seen in young adults age 15-24.

The foundation is particularly concerned as any resurgence of mumps could lead to an increase in the number of cases of mumps or viral meningitis, which is often more severe than other viral forms of meningitis.

The best way to protect children and teenagers against these painful and potentially dangerous diseases is by getting the MMR vaccine. If you are under 25 and have only had one dose of MMR you need to have a second dose. If you were never vaccinated with MMR you need two doses.
