Ballina councillors urged to support N5 upgrade

Members of the Ballina Municipal District have been asked to support a submission by Mayo County Council backing the upgrade of the N5 between Ballaghaderreen and Scramoge, east of Strokestown.

Director of services in the Ballina area, Tom Gilligan, told last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District that the council is making a submission because “strategically the road is very important for the county in connecting it with the east of the country”.

Submissions were to be submitted to An Bord Pleanala last Tuesday evening.

The stretch of the N5 under consideration passes through Frenchpark, Bellanagare, Tulsk, and Strokestown in Co Roscommon and would link the Ballaghaderreen bypass with Scramoge, east of Strokestown. The N5 is also the primary road into Co Mayo from the east.
