Are you getting ready for the annual spring clean of your home? Tomorrow, March 3, WEEE Ireland will host the first of six free collection events to make it easy for householders in Mayo to say goodbye to winter, clear out the waste electrical items in their homes, and send them for recycling and recovery.
The first collection will take place in Tesco car park in Swinford from 10am to 4pm tomorrow. The following Saturday, March 10, the collection will move to Market Square car park in Claremorris from 10am to 4pm. On Saturday, March 24, you can bring your electrical goods to the Tesco car park in Ballinrobe from 10am to 4pm.
Ballyhaunis will be the location for the fourth collection date on Saturday, March 31, in Knox's car park from 10am to 4pm. There will be two collections on Saturday, April 7, with one in the civic offices car park in Belmullet and the other in Keel Beach car park in Achill, both collections will run from 10am to 4pm.
Whether you need to return a lightbulb, hairdryer, washing machine, or dishwasher, anything with a plug or battery will be accepted free of charge at a collection event for recycling.
Householders who cannot make these events are reminded that there are plenty of locations to recycle e-waste free. Visit the interactive map on www.weeeireland.ie to find the nearest participating retailers and recycling centres.
Remember, it is not just the big appliances that count. An incredible 11,500,000 small appliances were recycled in WEEE Ireland’s contractor recycling plant in Offaly in 2016. That year also saw some 34,400 tonnes of electrical waste recycled rather than heading into landfill.
WEEE Ireland urges all householders to return waste batteries, lighting equipment, or small electrical waste for recycling at participating retailers or local authority recycling centres.
Keeping your spring clean green is a job for all the family. Children can get involved by returning their waste batteries in school through WEEE Ireland’s popular WEEE Pledge campaign – www.weeepledge.ie – while anyone can drop off batteries in big blue battery recycling boxes in shops in Mayo and across the country.
