Spring competitions get into full swing

Balla Golf Club

Winners of the Weekend Scramble held in conjunction with the Captains Drive In were Nora Heraty, Jimmy Sheridan, and Tom Jennings with a score of 43.6. Just a full point behind them was Pat Walsh with Mary Lavin and Mary Brett, with the side of Declan Nally, Tom Jennings, and Ray Mannion taking the last spot on the podium with a score of 44.8.

The club captains would like to thank everyone who turned up for the Drive In on Sunday to wish them well for the coming season. Your presence and wishes are greatly appreciated. Thanks also to all who brought refreshments and worked in the kitchen keeping all the golfers fed. Please note that as and from March 19, only fully paid up members will be eligible to win prizes in the weekly competitions.

Westport Golf Club

Prior to his trip, to the home of golf, St Andrew’s Bill Hopkins had a 2 and 1 victory over Pat Moran in the first semi-final of the winter league. The key match saw Kieran McGettigan victorious over Patrick Collins on the 16th.

Joe McCormack, one of the most popular senior members showed some early season form last week, when he recorded a birdie on the 17th at Westport. A reminder that the next seniors’ competition is scheduled to take place on Thursday March 26.

Next Wednesday will see the first open mid-week gents’ competition of the season. The competition on Sunday March 22 will be a 15 hole single stableford. A gents’ fourball “two to score on every hole” will take place on Sunday March 29. The entry sheet for the Murtagh Foursomes will be posted next weekend, with only prepaid teams entering the draw for the opening match-play round.

John Garavan: A special mention to head green keeper, John Garavan, who celebrated 35 years service on Friday last. Congratulations John.

Junior boys: The Fred Daly practice round at Carrick-On-Shannon will take place tomorrow Saturday March 21. The bus will leave at 12pm sharp from the golf club. Jim Browne will be using the Roy Keane “be on time or we’ll go without you” philosophy. The panel is Matthew Golden, Blane Lynch, Keith Geraghty, Ian Walsh, Darren Campion, Irla Byrne, Shane Golden, Joe Hastings, Jack Healy, Ronan Geraghty, and Michael O’Grady.

Ballyhaunis Golf Club

In last weekend’s golfer of the year competition, Padraic Cunnane playing off 19 was first out the gate to win a round with a score of 29. In the ladies’ section Nuala Fitzgerald came out on top of the pile with a score of 36 off 28, while in second place was Joan McGuire with a 34 on the back nine. Dave Hierons was the winner of the gents’ section with a score of 43 playing off 21. Three points back in second place was Tadhg Buckley with a score of 40 on the back nine, with Tommy Boyle also scoring a 40 to come home third off 14.
