Mustangs took to the court last Tuesday evening on their home turf in the newly lit up De La Salle Sports hall on their quest for win number six. They did not disappoint. Once again it was Ciara Griffin who was first out of the starting blocks, scoring the first basket of the game and getting the Mustangs underway on their mission.
It really is becoming a habit for this Mustang side to gallop well into the lead in the opening quarter, forcing the opposition to call the first time-out of the game to regroup. A strong first quarter saw the Mustangs hold the Longford side to single digits with the score reading 18-8. Nothing changed for the Mustang side in the second quarter as they came out with guns blazing. Sheila Cunningham got them off the mark with a great shot from just inside the three point line, followed by six consecutive points from Siobhan Kilkenny. Mustangs were relentless in their defence, getting steals, forcing turnovers and frustrating their opposition. Some great combination play from Ciara Griffin, Fiona Feeney, Siobhan Kilkenny and Lorna Moran saw the Mustangs score another 18 points in this quarter and finishing the half 36-16.
In the third quarter the Mustangs were determined not to let up on the tempo they had already created. It was Grainne Flynn’s turn to take the ball the full length of the court and finish the move with the ball in the basket. This was followed by scores from Ciara Griffin and Fiona Feeney who added to their tally for the night. A brilliant steal by Kilkenny from a long pass, saw her weave in and out between defenders and eventually delivering a ball to Karen Mulherin who knocked down a lovely shot from the corner. Mustangs held their opponents to only 6pts in this quarter and adding 13 more on to their tally. End of third quarter 49-22.The Mustangs Coach was able to get everyone equal playing time in the fourth quarter. Anita Hoban and Niamh Griffin continued the tenacious defence causing some havoc to Torpedos. There were some nice scores from Lorna Moran and Orla Brennan and we saw Mary Geever making her debut! This team are really gelling nicely together and growing in confidence game by game.
Mustangs would like to give a huge thanks to all who came to show their support. The supporter numbers seem to be growing week by week and the girls are very proud to see that.
