Mustangs win again on the road

Basketball: MUSTANGS 74 LONGFORD FALCONS 55

On the road again, and Longford bound, this time Mustangs were guests to former national league side, Longford Falcons in the Mall Sports Complex in Longford on Wednesday night last.

Once again, Fiona Feeney, winning the jump for the Mustangs squad, got the Castlebar side underway in this Longford contest and true to form Ciara Griffin opened the account for Mustangs at the end of a fast breaking ball. Siobhan Kilkenny led in true player-coach style with the next 10 points only to be sweetly followed by a Ciara Griffin three pointer adding to the frustration of the home side. If that wasn’t bad enough, postie Fiona Feeney then started an exchange of scores battle with captain Kilkenny, assisted by super long ball from Sinead Hughes. Finally, to put icing on the quarter, exactly on the first quarter whistle, Kilkenny launched the shot of the match, all the way from the halfway line, bagging a buzzer three point shot to add to the opposition woes. Quarter one ended 32-14 with Kilkenny on an impressive 21 point tally.

The second quarter saw Mustangs sustain their high tempo game and extend their lead with some lovely shooting from Siobhan Kilkenny and impressive combined shooting by Mustang post players Lorna Moran, Anita Hoban and Fiona Feeney to close the quarter. Halftime score displayed 50-27 in favour of the Mustangs.

The third quarter saw postie, Anita Hoban, bank the opener for the travelling side and the number 14 continued to present well and score through the quarter. Mustangs outscored again in this period of play, with the help of three point shots from coach Kilkenny and Sinead Hughes. With all 11 players sharing the court time for the second half, a united squad worked hard for each other and when the final whistle was blown, an astounding total of 10 Mustang players were on the score sheet and scores from Sheila Cunningham and Niamh Griffin closed out the quarter. Final score 74-55 to Mustangs.

Mustangs play their next game at home on Tuesday, November 21 against Longford Torpedos with 8.15pm tip off. The continued support from Castlebar is inspiring. Mustangs also wish the best of luck to Dave Loftus travelling to Mexico next week for AT&T Ironman Cozumel in Cozumel, Mexico on November 26 and to thank Michelle Hopkins who unfortunately is injured for us at the moment for coming to support us in Longford and doing such a great managerial/photographer role on the night.
