Parents who failed to send their children to school in court

A mother and father who did not comply in sending three of their children to school were summonsed by the National Education Welfare Board to Ballina District Court this week.

Paddy and Margaret Collins, 48 Mount Assumpta, Ballina had failed to send one 13-year-old secondary school student and a 10- and eight-year-old, both in national school, to their respective schools in December 2008.

The court heard that since the summonses were served on the Collins on February 13 this year attendance had improved. Solicitor for the defendants, John Gordon, said, “A lesson has been learned”.

Paddy Collins said that his older child read the summonses when they arrived and now his child understood that it was a serious matter not to attend school. Judge Mary Devins said, “You do realise that you are responsible” for sending the children to school. The judge adjourned the matter to July 14 for review.
