A man who knocked down a 91-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s and her daughter outside a shop in Ballina was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday for driving without reasonable consideration.
On October 2 last year Garda Jude Gallagher received a complaint at 9.55pm that Ms Isabelle Wilkes and her mother — who had emerged from a corner store which was located at the junction of Emmett and Bridge Street — were both knocked down when they went between two parked vehicles in order to cross the road.
According to Ms Wilkes the stationary car beside them suddenly moved and knocked them to the ground before they were assisted by passers by.
In a statement to gardaí, Leo Ronkin Basement Flat 4, Castle Road, Ballina, said that he slowly reversed out of the space and did not see anyone behind him, but when he realised what occurred he assisted Ms Wilkes and her mother and was co-operative with gardaí.
Solicitor for Ronkin, Peter Flynn, said that the incident was an accident and that and no sustainable injuries were received by Ms Wilkes or her mother.
Judge Mary Devins said that she would adjourn the case until March 24 to see if the issue might be resolved by way of contribution to a charity.
