Climate change in Mayo and the West of Ireland

This Westport Civic Trust lecture will be given by emeritus professor John Sweeney, Ireland’s leading expert on climate science, on Tuesday, October 17, at the Westport Coast Hotel at 8pm.

Climate science, climate policy, and climate justice have become increasingly intertwined and have gained considerable traction in the public consciousness as awareness of the shortening timescales for effective action has become clear. While many countries have responded to the threat by taking effective actions to mitigate their greenhouse gas emissions, Ireland is back on an increasing emissions trend and is a disproportionately high contributor to the problem. This talk will examine the nature of, and impacts of, climate change for Ireland and discuss why it is on course to fail its international obligations.

Professor John Sweeney has lectured in the Geography Department of Maynooth University for many years. Over the past 30 years he has published approximately 60 scientific papers and edited/co-authored four texts on various aspects of climatology and climate change in Ireland. He currently leads a number of nationally funded research projects examining various aspects of climate change in Ireland. Professor Sweeney contributed to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change, which was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He is currently president of An Taisce, the National Trust of Ireland, and a familiar spokesman in the media on climate change in Ireland.

All are welcome to this lecture which is to be given by a leading authority in this field, on a subject of major importance to us all and with increasing significance for coastal dwellers. No booking is required and further details are available from Pip Murphy on (087 ) 2663423.
