A fundraiser takes place this weekend in Swinford for a local man whose life changed forever after a fall at his home. John Doyle, then in his early 20s, fell on the stairs of his house, and endured life changing injuries. An expectant father at the time, John is now confined to a wheelchair and has lost the ability to speak.
He had to spend a number of years living in a local nursing home due to the lack of facilities available to meet his medical needs but thankfully those circumstances have now changed as John has been provided in recent times with a fully equipped ‘independent living’ home in the town. John’s family, friends, neighbours and local community have rallied around to try and help him in his quest to purchase a wheelchair accessible van and new technology which would enable him to communicate better.
John also has plans to return to education and is hoping to raise the necessary funds for the new van and technology which would then open to door for him to earn a place on GMIT’s Outdoor Education course, which would be an unprecedented achievement for a wheelchair user. A fundraiser is taking place in The Gateway Hotel on Saturday night, September 23, at 9.30pm. It promises to be a great event and there will be a raffle with spot prizes on the night.
