Prison sentence for women who stole from Dunnes

Two women were sentenced to prison at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday after they stole €200 worth of items from Dunnes Stores Castlebar.

Superintendent Willie Keaveny outlined that on August 11 last year Ann McDonagh, 27 Castlegrove, Castlebar, and Tina McDonagh, 56 An Sruthan, Castlebar, entered the store, with a child in a buggy, and proceeded to remove bedlinen from the drapery section and leave the store without paying.

CCTV footage identified the two women and a search warrant for the home of Ann McDonagh was effected on August 14, where the items were discovered, and Ann McDonagh admitting her involvement. Tina McDonagh was subsequently arrested for the offence on August 23 however she denied any involvement.

Both women, who are partners of two brothers, have previous convictions. Their solicitor Myles Gilvarry said that Ann McDonagh (26 ) was suffering from depression after the birth of her child which may have led to her stealing the clothes, while Tina McDonagh (18 ) is now pregnant and does not want to return to prison after a short stint which she experienced last year.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Tina McDonagh €500 and sentenced her to three months in prison. Ann McDonagh was convicted and fined €500 and sentenced to 28 days in prison. Recognisances were fixed.
