Population decline in the county lambasted

Councillor Frank Chambers said that Mayo County Council and all elected members have failed Mayo in not preventing the continuing population decline in north Mayo and on the islands. The councillor’s outburst came during a meeting of the Planning and Economic Development SPC this week while discussing the Local Area, Town, and Village Plan.

Chair of the SPC Cllr Jarlath Munnelly also expressed his concern for population decline in certain areas with the Fine Gael councillor saying that the county is almost divided in two, with the south of the county being heavily populated, and said that the Parish Study was an important piece of work which will “hopefully identify what is the root cause of this decline”.
