Mayo is set to benefit to the tune of almost €295,500 as part of the total CLÁR funding for safety improvements at 22 locations around the county.
The news of the funding has been welcomed by Paul Doland, head of the roads section of Mayo County Council, who said: “In particular, this funding is focused on issues such as safety at schools and community centres, and the development of amenities for young people in rural areas. I am confident that the funding provided through CLÁR will support communities here in Mayo as they look to ensure their children are safe and have recreational amenities available to them in their own communities."
The biggest portion of the funding will go towards providing a footpath extension on the N59 at Ballycroy National School which has been allocated €70,000. €60,000 has been earmarked for the relocation of warning lights and for the finishing of works on the school grounds at Loughanamon National School in Ballyhowley. In Ballinrobe, €22,000 has been allocated for the provision of a pedestrian crossing at Ballinrobe National School. The same amount was allocated for a pedestrian crossing at Geath Mor Theas in Binghamstown village in north Mayo. Six different schools were allocated €14,000 for driver feedback signs and speed safety signs, at Cross National School, Tooreen National School, Tourmakeady (national school and secondary school ), Errew National School, and Derrywash National School.
Other areas to have improvement works carries out at local national schools are Bekan, Bonniconlon, Carromore, Killasser, Culmore, Swinford, Midfield, Meelick, Moygownagh, Killacoraun, Augleam, and Newtowwhite.
