Scottish man called Ballina passers-by ‘Free State ba***rds’

A 43-year-old intoxicated man who shouted obscenities at middle aged bypassers for no apparent reason, was convicted of two public order offences at Ballina District Court this week.

On February 15 2009 at 11.55pm, Garda Noel Crinnegan observed Mark Murphy, 12 Cultara, Teeling Street, Ballina, shouting at people who had emerged from a nearby bar in Diamond’s Yard Car Park. After calling the group of people “Free State ba***rds” the defendant then ran after their car.

The Scottish man, who represented himself, said that he was stupid with drink on that night.

Judge Mary Devins convicted the unemployed man €300 for being threatening and abusive and €50 for being intoxicated in a public place.
